We already have talked about how to set achievable goals and how to stick with your plans until you achieve them.
Today I’m going to share the importance of setting a power word or a focus word for the year and how it can boost the speed of achieving your goals.
Working towards a goal and working with a schedule is difficult for everyone. It takes a lot of effort to get used to working for a schedule and work extra hard, by stepping out of your comfort zone.
It’s natural to get bored and sometimes take long pauses or breaks while you are working to achieve something. However, if you need to successfully achieve your goals, you have to focus on the time. Everything that we do in our daily life affects the time that we have allocated to achieve our goals.
But, if you have set a focus word for the year along with your goals or plans, you could have saved a lot of time and speed up the process of achieving your goals.
What is the meaning of the focus word?
The simple idea of setting a focus word for the year is, instead of focusing on multiple resolutions, to select one word and focus on mastering it throughout the whole year.
However, you can use this strategy as a tool to boost the process of achieving the goals that you have already set.
How to set a focus word for the year?
Before going any further, you need to take a moment and evaluate your past year. Find out what areas that you need to improve and what skills that you need to practice. Here, you need to be honest with yourself and accept the fact that you are lagging behind in some areas and skills. Identify them and make a list.
You can download our dream life makeover year-end evaluation tracker from here. It’s 100% FREE.
Now that you have your list with you, categorize the points that give you a similar idea.
Let’s say, practice to be more socialize, practice public speaking and make new friends are some of the points which were included in your list. So, you could have chosen a word of confidence or challenge as your new word of the year.
The reason for selecting those words depends on the definition that you give for those words.
According to the above example, someone (maybe an introvert) can see all those three points as a challenge and practice them as much as he/she can, which will really challenge their comfort zone.
On the other hand, someone can think that he/she is struggling with those three points because that person is having some major confidence issues.
That’s why it’s really important to evaluate your past couple of years and have a better idea about the skills and the things that you couldn’t accomplish.
However, let’s assume you already have planned your new year goals and you need to set a power word to boost the process of achieving them. The system is pretty much similar to the above example.
You need to gather similar goals or the goals that need similar skills to achieve them and set your focus word according to that. Here, you need to have a fair knowledge of the areas that make you slow down the process of achieving your goals. This could be your time management skills, your commitment or fear of taking the risk, or anything else.
If you need any help to identify these things, you can download my questionnaire from here and there are questions that you can give direct answers to identify the areas that make you slow down the process of achieving your goals.
How to use focus words to achieve goals?
Now that you have your focus word with you, let’s see how to use it for speeding up the process of achieving goals.
You can keep this word in your phone wallpaper and use this as a reminder whenever you feel like giving up on your goals or whenever you make decisions that affect your goals.

Nevertheless, you can create your own affirmation cards that include your focus word.
The point is, you need to keep reminding your focus word throughout the day and that will be a huge impact on the actions that you are taking daily basis. Achieving a goal is an accumulative result of daily actions. Therefore, make use of your focus word to take better actions or make better decisions.
This could be a huge help to reduce your unwanted actions and time-wasting activities which were not giving any value to your life. Further, your focus word could be your all-time motivation that boosts your energy to complete your daily tasks in order to achieve your goals.
