Abnormal or excessive fat accumulation is called obesity or overweight. The difference between obesity and overweight is the body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight and over 30 is obese.
What caused obesity
There are several reasons that lead to obesity or overweight and these are the common causes among them.
- Unhealthy lifestyle habits
It’s a well-known fact that unhealthy lifestyle habits such as lack of exercise, unhealthy eating patterns, lack of sleep and stress can cause obesity.
According to NIH “Eating too much or eating too little during your pregnancy can change your baby’s DNA and can affect how your child stores and uses fat later in life. Also, studies have shown that obese fathers have DNA changes in their sperm that can be passed on to their children.”
Women tend to store less unhealthy fat in the abdomen than men do.
However, in June 2021, Food and Drug Administration – FDA has approved Wegovy (semaglutide) which is a weight management injection for adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition.
FDA further indicates weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.
The main focus of using this new drug is to reduce the calorie diet and increase physical activities for obese people.
How does Wegovy work?
Harvard Health describes Wegovy and its reaction in our body by saying “Wegovy is the brand name for the high-dose injectable peptide hormone molecule known as semaglutide, a medication that was previously approved by the FDA under the brand names Rybelsus (oral) and Ozempic (lower-dose injection) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Injectable semaglutide eliminates the strict guidelines for ingesting on an empty stomach required by oral semaglutide, while the higher-dose Wegovy allows for the better crossing of the blood-brain barrier, which increases its weight-loss efficacy. Semaglutide is in a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1 RAs. GLP-1 is a hormone naturally released in the gastrointestinal tract in response to nutrient intake. It has multiple effects, including increasing insulin release from the pancreas, slowing down stomach emptying, and targeting receptors in the brain that cause appetite reduction. This results in a sensation of satiety, or fullness, lasting much longer than possible with natural GLP-1 hormone levels”.
How long can you take Wegovy?
Wegovy is a long term treatment for obesity and according to Harvard Health, this new drug can be used for as long as it remains beneficial for weight loss and/or weight maintenance and is not causing intolerable side effects
Wegovy’s safety and efficacy were studied in four 68-week trials and as a result, they have found out these common side effects ;
- Abdominal (stomach) pain
- Dyspepsia (indigestion)
- Abdominal distension
- Eructation (belching)
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in patients with type 2 diabetes
- Flatulence (gas buildup)
- Gastroenteritis (an intestinal infection)
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (a type of digestive disorder)
